This Week’s Featured Artist - awesomelypurple

This week’s featured artist is amazing. We really noticed her with her recent Paris clip, it was so pretty with the Eiffel Tower behind the characters. It was just a perfect Paris scene. We also loved her Wicked movie posters, which were great. Everything she has created has been excellent. We also love that she is so involved in our Friday Night Doinking and community contests. She is an inspiration to everyone in the Doink community. This week’s featured artist is awesomelypurple.

Tell us about yourself, what is a typical day like?

A typical day for me has changed a bit. Now that I’m going into high school I have to wake up a whole hour earlier than I did because the school I’m going to is about a half-hour away from my house. So I wake up at 6 and go to school. I always have Jazz Band in the morning before school starts.  There’s a bit of time between band and school so I go into the cafeteria and munch on the free breakfast the school provides. Then I go to my other classes. Provided I don’t have any sports practices or other after school activities I go home. I’m a softball fanatic so when I come home I do my physical therapy exercises (I hurt my shoulder awhile back) before I practice pitching or hitting. Afterward I go in and do homework. In the evening I go on DoInk for awhile before bed. Also, I live in a family of four; me, my little sister Alexis, Mom, and Dad. We have a lot of pets. Four cats, five birds, a rat, two snakes, and a fish share our house with us. We are looking to adopt a dog soon.

How old were you when you started drawing? Ever animated anything before?

I started drawing the first moment I understood that crayons and paint were not for eating. My parent have a ton of pictures of me at a little easel finger painting or drawing with chalk. I was more of a drawer and I still am,so I had never thought about animating something until my teacher showed me DoInk.

Do you have a favorite artist or animator?

I really like Andy Warhol. I recently found out about a street artist called Kate Sokoler. She makes some really cool stuff and then blogs about it. You should go see her blog called Color Me Katie, it’s pretty cool. Animators? Well I envy all you DoInkers who can animate well. :)

What inspires you?

I am inspired by everything around me. At school whenever something funny happens I draw a picture about it. Once on a History test there was a multiple choice question that asked who the first man in space was. One of the choices was the Wizard of Oz. I laughed and got this really vivid visual of Dorothy on the moon saying “Toto I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore.” I drew that and gave it to my history teacher and he keeps it taped to his desk. Inspiration can come from anywhere, you just need to really open your eyes and look around. In today’s society most people only see the sparkliest, largest, most expensive stuff but to be inspired you need to see the little things. Truly take in your surroundings. If you don’t understand any of this babbling then you need to read Stargirl. It’s a pretty good book.

Do you have a favorite cartoon and/or anime character?

My favorite cartoon is the Simpsons, they can never fail to make me laugh. I used to watch a lot of anime but I sort of lost interest. So far my favorite one is Full Metal Panic.

What is your favorite musician or band, what are you listening to?

I like all kinds of music, that’s why soundtrack are my BFFs. They’re a mishmash of styles and artists which I like. Lately, my favorites have been the Twilight Soundtrack and the Hunger Games Soundtrack. I like Eyes on Fire by Blue Foundation and Supermassive Black Hole by Muse in Twilight. In the Hunger Games my favorites are both songs by Taylor Swift, One Engine by the Decemberists, Abraham’s Daughter by Arcade Fire, and I’m strangely attracted to The Ruler and the Killer by Kid Cudi.

What are your Favorite websites, outside of DoInk?

I do Facebook and Pinterest, but I also like to do a lot of online shopping. My favorite shopping site is fredflare.com they have the coolest stuff like bacon band aids and gummy bear ear buds! And I can’t forget youtube, pandora, or grooveshark where I get my music.

What are your hobbies?

My hobbies are baking, bracelet weaving, painting, and sports. Oh, I love my sports! I play softball, volleyball and basketball, but I only do basketball and softball competitively. Softball is my #1 sport. I’m a pitcher so I have to practice year-round to keep getting better. My pitching coach makes me set goals that I have to reach at a certain time. For example I pitch 53mph right now but Coach wants me at 55 by December. It’s sooooo fun! To make money I bake cake pops and make fabric bracelets to sell at my little sister’s soccer games.

What are your favorite Computer Games?

I don’t really play games on the computer. My favorite phone game is cut the rope.

How did you find DoInk and what is your experience so far?

DoInk is a great place! I love the community. Before DoInk I was the only person really concerned about art at my school so I had nobody to talk to about it. Now I can talk to a whole group of artists and its great!

If you could add any features to DoInk, what would they be?

If I could add any feature I would add a brush opacity tool. I know there is an opacity tool in composition but I think it would be cool if you could change the opacity in drawing rather than in composition.

Any advice for other DoInk users?

If you are confused about something always ask. Don’t be afraid to start a topic in the forum on something. I had no clue how to move things around in composition for the longest time, but once I asked it made things so much easier!

What is your favorite clip that you have done?

My favorite clip is this one I did of an owl. Did I tell you how much I love owls?
