The Halloween Contest Winner Interview - Sketchcat

We had to learn more about this amazing artist and animator who could take Dr. Horrible and a bunch of pumpkins and turn them into such an amazing Halloween animation! We hope you all have an awesome Halloween! Thanks again to everyone for taking so much time, to make the most amazing Halloween animations ever! We will have another contest soon.

What is your favorite Halloween memory?

Ah, I do have to say this one. When I was somewhere between 5-7 (I’m not good with placing my age with my memories) I was nearing the end of my trick or treating. I don’t remember what costume I was wearing, but I do remember my candy stuffed pumpkin candy bag I had. It was extremely full, and it was quite heavy! Anyway, my friends and I were nearing this ominous house, smoke billowing from the garage. My friends shied away, after all, somebody was yelling or something, and my friends cried, “I don’t wanna go there!” Being my curious self, I figured I should check it out. After all, I knew nobody was actually going to hurt me. I bravely approached the garage, ready for any attack. A voice started threatening me, and I knew better. The voice kept taunting, and I was talking back, trying to convince the voice that I was not scared! He was clearly not getting the message. I raised my candy-stuffed pumpkin. Trying to get the approximate area of the voice, I listened one more time. Then, after the voice spoke again, I slammed my pumpkin into the garage door! WHAM! “I’m not scared of you!!”
I think I heard the voice groaning as I walked off with a grin on my face. ;)

Any scary Halloween memories?

Eh, not really. Sorry about that. Perhaps the one time the neighbor put on that mask and answered the door with a, “ROAR!!!” My friend and I ran alllll the way across the street. I was not happy.

What is your favorite Halloween candy?

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups!!! I could eat three pillowcases full!
Also, those little candies wrapped in strawberry wrappers. I don’t know what they are called, but I love them. (It’s so gooey inside!!)

What candy do you not like in your bag?

When I was younger, I didn’t all that much like gum. I also didn’t like it when I got all the same candy. But usually, the candy in my bag was usually eaten anyway.

What is your favorite costume that you have worn?

Oh, I’ve been a half angel/half devil, a cat over five times, a witch, a witch again, a giraffe one year, some sort of fairy, a grim reaper…. a cat…. a bee when I was REALLY little, and a peapod when I was even younger….
I think my cat costume in sixth grade was the best, it was from my musical that year, and I had spraypainted hair and everything. Also, the costume was homemade (We bought the leotard) and I remember sponging on the paint. I also remember making the tail, tying string on string. I still think that’s such a cool costume. I mean, it even has arm and leg warmers!

What is you favorite costume you saw on someone else?

My dad has worn a banana costume twice. My friend burst out laughing when she saw him, and I remember sitting at Culver’s dining on ice cream, while dad ate a banana split. Everyone laughed because, well, what’s funnier than a guy in a banana suit eating a banana split saying, “Hey, I gotta split.”?

What are you doing for Halloween this year? Are you dressing up?

Well, I was a zombie in the local parade, and I think I did a pretty impressive zombie impression. A group of girls even screamed! (Don’t worry, they’re ok.) I believe I will be roaming my neighborhood street, moaning at little trick-or-treaters who dare to come near to me. I still need to find a zombie buddy though…

What is your favorite Halloween color- orange or black?

Orange is a bright expressive color. I think I like orange because the only way I can spell it is if I sing it the way I learned in kindergarten. “O-r-a,n,g,e…O-r-a,n,g,e…O-r-a,n,g,e… That’s how you spell orange!”

Do you have a favorite Halloween song?

I was shopping for my Halloween costume the other day and some music was playing. I looked it up and it’s called “Halloween” by Aqua. (I could have never guessed the name!) ;)

What is your favorite design for a Halloween Jack-o-lantern?

Something creative, I really admire people who come up with their own designs. It’s fun to see what people will think of! I really like scenes, or the moon. A simple jack-o-lantern face is still pretty cool too!

What is your favorite scary movie?

Oh, man. I don’t watch many scary movies… Wait! Does Super 8 count? That was a pretty cool movie. It didn’t have a thing to do with Halloween, but still, I believe it files in with scary movies. I was yelling at the screen, “NO! DON’T GO OUTSIDE! THE ALIEN’S GONNA EAT YOU, YOU DUMMY!!”
The guy still went outside, ignoring my advise. Needless to say, he died.

Here is the two runner up clips for the Halloween Contest (I already posted Sketchcat’s amazing animation when she won!):
